Along the Malabar Coast of Kerala, the backwaters of Alleppey unfold through endless lagoons and quiet canals drifting across Lake Vembanad. Aboard a traditional kettuvallam — once a handcrafted wooden fishing boat made from coir and timber — time seems to slow beneath the tropical heat and spice-laden air.
Surrounded by rice fields, papaya and mango trees, coconut palms rise wrapped in climbing pepper vines. Hidden among the leaves, the dark pepper berries recall the “black gold” once traded for centuries through the port of Kochi.
